What Does Sports Betting + and – Signify?
One of the reasons why sports betting is so exhilarating is because there are many possible outcomes. To give punters an advantage, bookmakers offer several betting markets. The betting market ranges from betting on the regular 1×2 to double chance, correct score, etc. However, every punter needs to be able to interpret betting odds.
In addition to common types of betting options, you’ll often find the + and – betting options with operators that use American betting odds. So, if you have an interest in betting on the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA lines, and so on, then it’s crucial you understand how the American betting odds work to get the best possible value. This article will cover everything from how to read to how to use the + and – sign in sports betting.
How does the + and – sign work in sports betting?
The American odds system is commonly used in US sportsbooks. The + and—signs in the American odds system can mean different things, depending on whether they express point spread or odds. But often, the + and—sign indicates who is the favorite and underdog in the match. Also, it represents the potential win amount from a bet.
The minus sign represents the favorite team in a match-up or the athlete or team that is most likely to win the match. The number following after the minus sign indicates the amount bettors must wager to win $100. For example, if a bookmaker listing shows Team A listed at -250, it means bettors need to wager $250 to win $100 plus your original $250 bet.
On the contrary, the plus sign represents the underdog team in a match or the athlete or team that is less likely to win the match. Also, the number following after the plus sign indicates how much the team would win. For example, if a bookmaker listing shows Team B listed at +300, and you bet $100 on Team Be to win and it wins, you would win $300 plus your original $100 bet.
How to read the + and – odds in a spread bet?
Understanding how the plus and minus sign works in a spread bet is important, as it allows players to take advantage of all the options they are presented with. In a point spread, the minus symbol represents the favorite, while the plus represents the underdog.
For example, if a bookmaker lists two teams, Team A facing Team B at -7.5, it means that they need to win the game by at least eight points for your bet to cash. In this example, Team B would be +7.5, and they can lose by as much as seven points, and you will still win the bet. This bet type is a way to even match up teams with different skill levels.
How do you calculate and bet using the + and – sign?
The way the plus and minus sign works is slightly different from sport to sport. So, in this section, we’ll explain how to calculate and bet using the plus and minus signs in the most famous American sports.
-
NFL
The plus and minus signs in the NFL represent different types of market point spread, betting odds, prop bets, money lines, prop bets for players and teams, and another common wager type. Spread represents point handicaps for teams, whereas with odds, it represents the outcome of bets, more like what punters stand to win.
-
NBA
In the NBA, the plus and minus signs represent the same things as in the NFL. They can either be used to represent any standard wager or a spread. One distinct difference between the use of the plus and minus symbols in the NFL and the NBA is that in the NBA, it’s possible to have the plus sign odds for underdogs.
-
MLB
In Major League Baseball, there is no significant difference when reading the plus and minus signs in odds and lines. However, one important thing to note is that there are no points in the MLB. Scoring in the MLB is referred to in terms of runs. As such, you may see points spread in the MLB represented as run lines, which means the same thing.
-
NHL
The NHL is similar to the MLB in that reading the plus and minus signs is similar since scoring in the league is not indicated in points but in goals. And like in the MLB, instead of seeing a point spread, it is indicated as a puck line in the NHL. With the puck line, bettors may sometimes see a spread of 2.5 if the top-tier side is playing a bottom feeder, and the odds are adjusted accordingly. It’s rare in the NHL and MLB to see whole number spreads.
