PSG duo set to miss UCL clash against Bayern Munich

Paris Saint-Germain could be without two of their most influential players for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich at home, according to coach Mauricio Pochettino, who claims captain Marquinhos and playmaker Marco Verratti are unlikely to start.

“We will see how Marquinhos feels tomorrow. He should be able to be in the squad, not to start, but he could be on the bench,” When asked about the health of the Brazilian defender, Pochettino told media on Monday.

Marquinhos scored PSG’s second goal 28 minutes into the first leg’s 3-2 victory in Munich last week, but he was forced off with a thigh injury moments later and did not appear in Ligue 1 this weekend.

Meanwhile, following his return from Italy service with Alessandro Florenzi, Verratti missed the first leg after testing positive for Covid-19. Verratti has been absent from PSG’s last three games.

“It will be difficult for Marco to start, Alessandro too although we are waiting to decide,” Pochettino added.

PSG is hoping to avoid a repeat of their previous round matchup with Barcelona, where they won 4-1 away in the first leg but struggled in the return leg at the Parc des Princes before drawing 1-1 and progressing.

“In the first half at home to Barcelona we struggled to hold onto the ball,” Pochettino said.

“The approach needs to be different to the Barcelona game. We need to defend well but also try to cause problems to our opponents. That is the challenge facing us.”

In the semi-finals, the winners will face either Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund.
